Honoring the Winter Solstice - Rest & Restore with Sound Healing
This Sunday, December 21st, we welcome the Winter Solstice, a quiet shift in the rhythm of the natural year. The word solstice comes from the Latin words sol, meaning sun, and sistere, meaning to stand still, reflecting the moment when the Sun appears to pause at its lowest point in the sky. This day marks the shortest day and longest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. From here, daylight slowly begins to return, reminding us that even though winter has just begun, the journey back toward the light is already underway.
Astronomically, the solstice happens because of the Earth’s tilt. As our planet orbits the Sun, different parts of the Earth receive varying amounts of sunlight throughout the year. During the Winter Solstice, the Northern Hemisphere is tilted farthest away from the Sun, creating longer nights and shorter days. After this point, the light gradually increases, reminding us that change is always happening, even when it feels subtle.
Spiritually and symbolically, the Winter Solstice represents rebirth, renewal, and hope. For centuries, cultures around the world have honored this day as a sacred pause. It invites us to slow down, reflect, and turn inward. Nature itself is resting, conserving energy, and preparing for new growth beneath the surface. The solstice encourages us to do the same.
This time of year is deeply connected to Yule, an ancient pagan festival that celebrates the rebirth of the Sun. Yule traditions often include lighting candles, decorating with evergreens, and honoring cycles of death and rebirth. Evergreens symbolize resilience and the continuity of life, even during the darkest months. Candles and fire represent warmth, protection, and the return of light. Many modern holiday traditions have roots in these ancient Yule celebrations, including wreaths, lights, and gathering with loved ones during the darkest time of the year.
On a personal level, the Winter Solstice is a beautiful opportunity to check in with yourself. You may notice a natural pull toward rest, reflection, and quiet as the year comes to a close. This is a powerful time to acknowledge what this past year has brought, both the challenges and the growth, and to gently release what no longer feels aligned, while setting intentions for the months ahead. Simple rituals can help mark this moment, such as lighting a candle and sitting quietly in reflection, journaling to let thoughts and emotions surface without judgment, or spending a few mindful moments in nature to reconnect with the seasonal rhythm. You might also choose to create a cozy ritual at home with calming music, a warm drink, or a gentle breathing practice to support rest and renewal.

Energetically, the Winter Solstice can bring heightened emotions, fatigue, or a sense of heaviness for some people. The darkness asks us to feel, rather than rush past, what is present.
If you have been feeling overwhelmed, drained, or out of alignment, this seasonal shift is a powerful time to schedule an energetic tune-up. A personalized Reiki and Sound Healing session can help you reset, reconnect with yourself, and step into the returning light feeling grounded and supported, allowing the light to return both in the world and within you.
